Surya Kumar Yadav was preferred over Sanju Samson in the Asia Cup, and it was clear that the management of Team India wanted the former to also be in the World Cup squad. As it turned out, Sky was picked in the 15-member India World Cup squad, whereas Samson was picked as a reserve for the Asia Cup and did not find any place in the World Cup squad. Former all-rounder of the Australian cricket team, Tom Moody, did not agree with the decision of the selectors and said that he was lucky to be in the World Cup squad of Team India.
Moody said, "He is lucky to be in that squad purely because of the case that mounts against him for someone like Tilak Varma, who gives you that left-hand batting specialist in the middle order who can bowl part-time spin."
The former coach of Sri Lanka and Sunrisers Hyderabad said Tilak would have been given more flexibility in the Indian middle order.
He further said, "It gives them flexibility around the Ishan Kishan discussion. It doesn't mean both of them can't play on the same side, but it gives the flexibility that Rohit Sharma talked about quite regularly in the press conference."
