The ODI World Cup squad for Team India is most likely to be announced today, September 3. The chief of the board of control for cricket in India, Ajit Agarkar, flew to Sri Lanka to hold a discussion with the management of the team and finalize the squad. Although there are no big surprises from the Asia Cup 2023 squad that the BCCI recently picked, the squad for the ODI World Cup is going to be a 15-member squad, which means there was no place for wicketkeeper and batsman Sanju Samson, where KL Rahul was picked in.
While announcing the squad for the Asia Cup, Agarkar suggested that the ODI World Cup roster is also going to be on similar lines. In the 17-member Asia Cup squad, Samson was included as a backup for Rahul, but in the World Cup squad, which consists of 15 players, two members from the main squad had to be removed.
It has been learned that the two members who will be excluded from the World Cup squad are Tilak Varma and Prasadh Krishna. On one side, Tilak was handed his maiden ODI call-up for the Asia Cup 2023, and Krishan was included in the squad after a long injury layoff. Among the returning players, all three—Jasprit Bumrah, Shreyas Iyer, and KL Rahul—have earned a spot in the World Cup squad. Also among the big absentees, Yuzvendra Chahal will again get no place in the World Cup squad, whereas despite the struggling performance of Surya Kumar Yadav, he retains his spot in the squad.
