A few hours after the Indian cricket team lifted the trophy of the T20 World Cup 2024, Ravindra Jadeja announced his retirement from the format after India defeated South Africa by 7 runs. Virat Kohli announced that this is going to be his last time representing India in the shortest format of the game after winning the player of the match award, and captain Rohit Sharma followed suit, announcing his retirement in the post-match conference.
Ravindra Jadeja has represented the Indian cricket team in seven editions of the T20 World Cup, and 30 of his 74 T20Is came when he was playing in the mega-event. However, in the recently concluded 2024 editions, Jadeja wasn’t in his best form. In the eight matches, he scored only 35 runs and took just one wicket. Realizing he wasn’t able to perform at the level he and the team expected, he decided to bid farewell to the format on an all-time high.
In his T20I career, Jadeja took 54 wickets and scored 515 runs. A faithful servant of Indian cricket, Jadeja will continue to play ODI and Test cricket, with the Champions Trophy 2025 and the World Test Champions Final 2025 trophy as his next ambitions.
Jadeja took to Instagram to announce his retirement. He wrote in a heartfelt post online, “With a heart full of gratitude, I bid farewell to T20 internationals. Like a steadfast horse galloping with pride, I’ve always given my best for my country and will continue to do so in other formats. Winning the T20 World Cup was a dream come true and the pinnacle of my T20 international career. Thank you for the memories, the cheers, and the unwavering support.”
