After the ODI World Cup 2023, the India Cricket Team's transition plan will get the green light. It’s the incoming chief selector who will discuss the "future" with Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, along with a number of senior players, including Ravichandran Ashwin. Ajit Agarkar is the frontrunner to take over the chief selector post. He has applied for the role after quitting his Delhi Capitals assistant coach job.
There have been a lot of talks about the transition from the shortest format of the game for two stalwarts of Indian Cricket. While Virat Kohli is 34, Rohit Sharma is 36, and age is not on their side.
As per the statement of a senior BCCI official, "One of the jobs of the chief selector is to speak to the players about their future plans. Rohit and Virat are not immune to that. Yes, we would have wanted to continue as long as they wanted. But all great players have time to consider their plans. Playing three formats and the IPL won’t be an easy job."
With the focus shifting to T20s and Tests immediately after the World Cup, Hardik Pandya will formally take over the T20 and ODI captaincy. Like the ODI World Cup, the plan is to have a core team of 20 players for the T20 World Cup in 2024. And it’s unlikely that either Rohit would feature in the plans. But there is still a possibility for Kohli, considering his fitness.
