Ahead of Sydney Test, Australian PM Anthony Albanese hosts both teams

On January 1, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese hosted the Indian and Australian cricket teams ahead of the fifth Test at the Sydney Cricket Ground. The PM shared moments from the meeting on social media, including a light-hearted exchange with ViratKohli. Australian captain Pat Cummins addressed the players, while legendary fast bowler Glenn McGrath presented Albanese with a pink cap from the McGrath Foundation.

The New Year’s Test is significant for its celebration of ‘Jane McGrath Day’ on Day 3, honoring Glenn McGrath’s late wife, who passed away from breast cancer in 2008. The McGrath Foundation, co-founded by the couple in 2005, raises funds for breast care nurses and promotes awareness among young women. During this day, fans wear pink to support breast cancer awareness, and the Australian team dons special pink jerseys.

Currently, Australia leads the series 2-1 after defeating India by 184 runs in the fourth Test. Rohit Sharma’s team faces immense pressure to perform in Sydney, as a loss or draw would mean relinquishing their hold on the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, which they have held since 2017.
