As Gujarat Giants captain For WPL 2025, Ashleigh Gardner replaces Beth Mooney

Australian all-rounder Ashleigh Gardner has been appointed as the captain of Gujarat Giants for the upcoming Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2025 season. Gardner, a vital part of the Giants since the league’s inception, has made significant contributions over the last two seasons, scoring 324 runs and taking 17 wickets. She is a two-time Belinda Clark Award winner and played a crucial role in Australia’s gold medal victory at the 2022 Commonwealth Games, also being named Player of the Tournament at the 2023 T20 World Cup in South Africa.

Expressing her enthusiasm for the new role, Gardner stated, “It’s an absolute honour to captain Gujarat Giants. I have loved being part of this team, and I’m eager to lead this fantastic group.” She emphasized the team’s blend of youth and experience alongside talented Indian players.

Head coach Michael Klinger praised Gardner’s leadership qualities, describing her as a “fierce competitor” with strong tactical skills. He expressed confidence that she would lead effectively. Former captain Beth Mooney will now focus on her role as wicketkeeper and opening batter. The Giants aim for a stronger performance this season after finishing last in the previous tournament with only two wins in eight matches.
