Reports of discord within the Indian cricket team’s dressing room continue to surface, particularly highlighting tensions between coach GautamGambhir and assistant coach MorneMorkel. Following India’s disappointing 1-3 defeat in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia, an incident was reported during a review meeting held on January 11. Morkel was publicly reprimanded by Gambhir for arriving late to a practice session due to a personal meeting, which reportedly led to Morkel being reserved for the remainder of the tour.
A BCCI source stated, “Gambhir is very strict about discipline. He reprimanded Morkel immediately at the ground,” indicating that it is now up to the two coaches to resolve their differences for the team’s smooth functioning.
Additionally, both assistant coaches, Abhishek Nayar and Ryan ten Doeschate, are under scrutiny following the series loss. The BCCI is considering capping the contracts of support staff to 2-3 years, with questions raised about Nayar’s contributions as batting coach and Doeschate’s international experience.
As pressure mounts on Gambhir and the coaching staff, maintaining team unity will be crucial for India’s performance in upcoming matches. The ongoing tensions underscore the need for effective communication and collaboration within the team structure.
