Australia Star Announces ODI Retirement Days Ahead Of Tournament, Named In Champions Trophy Squad

Marcus Stoinis has announced his immediate retirement from ODI cricket, just ahead of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. The 35-year-old all-rounder’s decision means that Cricket Australia (CA) will need to replace him in their squad for the tournament.Stoinis, however, will continue to be available for selection in T20Is.

Stoinis, who was part of Australia’s 2023 ODI World Cup-winning team, stated that he wants to focus on T20 cricket. He described his ODI career as an ”incredible journey” and thanked his coach, Andrew McDonald, for his support. In 71 ODI matches, Stoinis scored 1495 runs, with a high score of 146 not out against New Zealand in Auckland, and took 48 wickets. His ODI debut was against England in 2015.

Andrew McDonald acknowledged Stoinis’s pivotal role in the ODI setup over the past decade, praising his leadership and popularity within the team. Stoinis’s retirement, combined with injury concerns for Pat Cummins and Josh Hazlewood, means that Australia will need to fill multiple spots in their 15-man squad for the Champions Trophy. Teams have until February 11 to finalize their squads.
