Former India batter Abhinav Mukund revealed that legendary off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin had been contemplating retirement for several months before officially announcing the end of his illustrious international career. Ashwin’s retirement came after India’s thrilling draw against Australia in the third Test at the Gabba.
Over his 14-year career, Ashwin claimed 537 wickets in 106 Test matches at an impressive average of 24, making him India’s second-highest wicket-taker in Tests, behind Anil Kumble. His remarkable statistics include 37 five-wicket hauls and eight ten-wicket match hauls, alongside scoring six centuries and 14 fifties with the bat.
In his final international match, the day-night Test in Adelaide, Ashwin took 1 for 53 and scored 29 runs. Mukund, who shared a close bond with Ashwin from their domestic cricket days, described him as a relentless thinker with a keen intellect that extended beyond cricket. He reminisced about their time together during long bus rides, where Ashwin often engaged in strategic games and mock IPL auctions.
Mukund emphasized that while Ashwin is still a “work in progress,” his dedication to improvement and analytical mindset will ensure he continues to surprise and inspire. As Ashwin steps away from international cricket, his legacy as one of India’s greatest spinners remains firmly established.
