Cristiano Ronaldo vowed on Monday that he will "never give up" playing for Portugal as he prepares to make his 200th international appearance in Euro 2024 qualification against Iceland. When he gained his 197th cap against Liechtenstein in March, the 38-year-old set a new men's international record. "I will never give up coming here (to the Portugal national team), because it's always a dream," he said before of Tuesday's encounter at a news conference in Reykjavik.
"Reaching 200 international matches isn't just for anyone; it demonstrates my love for my country and my team."
Ronaldo has four goals in three games since taking over as Portugal coach earlier this year, but he was held scoreless in last week's 3-0 triumph against Bosnia and Herzegovina.
"It would be incredible to cap my 200th international game with a goal," Ronaldo, the all-time men's international scorer with 122 goals, said.
"I'm not after records; they're after me." I'm pleased because it contributes to my desire to perform at the top level with the squad.
"I never thought I'd be able to do it."
Martinez stated that the striker, who now plays for Al-Nassr in Saudi Arabia, will get the start.
"A player reaching 200 matches is exceptional," stated the former Belgium manager.
"It's a source of pride for Portuguese football."
Portugal is already on track to qualify for next year's Euros in Germany, having topped Group J after scoring 13 goals without reply in three straight victories.
