Despite Bumrah heroics on Day 2, Head, Smith give India WTC Final flashback

On Day 2 of the third Test at The Gabba, Travis Head and Steve Smith showcased their batting prowess, both scoring centuries as Australia reached a formidable total of 405 for 7. Head, fresh off a match-winning 140 in Adelaide, struck an impressive 152 off 160 balls, while Smith marked his return to form with a laborious 101 runs. Their partnership of 241 runs for the fourth wicket was pivotal in stabilizing Australia’s innings after early setbacks.

India’s decision to bowl first after winning the toss initially seemed promising, with JaspritBumrah taking two early wickets, dismissing Usman Khawaja and Nathan McSweeney. However, the Indian bowlers struggled to maintain pressure, allowing Head and Smith to build their partnership. Bumrah’s efforts were commendable as he claimed five wickets for 72 runs, marking his second five-wicket haul in the series.

Despite Siraj’s discomfort and Jadeja’s disappointing performance, Head’s aggressive batting style and Smith’s composed approach propelled Australia forward. The duo took Australia to lunch at 234 for 3 and continued their dominance after the break. Although Bumrah managed to dismiss both Smith and Head with the new ball, Alex Carey (45 not out) and Pat Cummins (20) ensured Australia ended the day on top. With rain affecting play on Day 1, India’s response with the bat will be crucial as they aim to keep the series alive.
