The England national cricket team has unveiled its playing XI for the first T20I against India, set to take place on January 22, 2025, at Eden Gardens in Kolkata. Jos Buttler will serve as a specialist batter and captain, while Harry Brook has been appointed vice-captain.
This five-match T20I series marks the beginning of England's tour, with subsequent matches scheduled in Chennai, Rajkot, Pune, and Mumbai. Following the T20Is, England will also compete in three ODI matches against India. Notably absent from the squad for the opening match are Jamie Smith, Brydon Carse, Saqib Mahmood, and Rehan Ahmed.
Head coach Brendon McCullum has indicated that all players will have opportunities to participate throughout the series. The T20I series serves as vital preparation for both teams ahead of the ICC Champions Trophy starting February 19 in Pakistan and Dubai. This match is significant as it is the first international game at Eden Gardens since November 2023 and will feature veteran pacer Mohammed Shami returning to the national setup after injury.
Playing XI: Phil Salt (wk), Ben Duckett, Jos Buttler (c), Harry Brook (vc), Liam Livingstone, Jacob Bethell, Jamie Overton, Gus Atkinson, Jofra Archer, Adil Rashid, Mark Wood.
