Ex India Head Coach Ravi Shastri reveals what made Ravichandran Ashwin ‘stand out’

Ravichandran Ashwin, the celebrated Indian off-spinner, announced his retirement from international cricket following the third Test against Australia at Gabba, Brisbane. The 38-year-old’s decision came as a shock to fans and pundits alike, marking the end of a remarkable career in which he became India’s second-highest wicket-taker in Tests, with 537 wickets to his name.

Ashwin’s announcement was unexpected, especially as he had been selected for the tour of Australia. However, reports suggest that he had been contemplating retirement due to ongoing knee issues and his fluctuating role within the team. His father indicated that feelings of humiliation over being dropped from matches may have influenced Ashwin’s decision. Despite his stellar record, Ashwin faced challenges in securing a consistent spot in the playing XI.

Former India head coach Ravi Shastri paid tribute to Ashwin, highlighting his relentless pursuit of improvement throughout his career. Shastri praised Ashwin’s partnership with Ravindra Jadeja, referring to them as “the real spin twins.” He emphasized that Ashwin’s ability to evolve and learn new techniques kept him relevant in modern cricket.

As Ashwin returns home to Chennai, he expressed no regrets about his decision and looks forward to continuing his cricketing journey at the franchise level with Chennai Super Kings. His retirement leaves a significant void in India’s spin bowling arsenal as they continue their tour in Australia.
