Sunil Narine, one of the most iconic players in Kolkata Knight Riders' (KKR) history, has been instrumental in their success over the years. Now 36, Narine has transitioned from a mystery spinner to a dynamic all-rounder, helping KKR win three IPL titles and earning three Most Valuable Player (MVP) awards. Former KKR teammate Manvinder Bisla recently revealed on the Knuckleball by NDTV podcast that Narine’s unique approach to training—avoiding bowling in nets—was key to his success. Bisla explained that Narine wanted to remain unreadable to batters, especially those who might later play for rival franchises. As a wicketkeeper, Bisla humorously recalled requesting Narine to bowl a few deliveries so he could prepare for his variations, though even then, understanding them was a challenge.
Narine’s impact on KKR remains unparalleled. In IPL 2024, he delivered an extraordinary season, scoring 488 runs at a strike rate of over 180 and taking 17 wickets with an economy of 6.69, securing the MVP award and leading KKR to their third title. Continuing his form in IPL 2025, he has already scored 125 runs at a strike rate nearing 190 and claimed five wickets in five matches. His evolution as an all-rounder underscores his immense value to KKR.
