Legendary cricketer Sunil Gavaskar has expressed strong criticism of the Indian cricket team’s coaching staff, led by GautamGambhir, following India’s disappointing 1-3 series loss to Australia in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25. Despite a promising start with a victory in the series opener, the team struggled significantly, culminating in a six-wicket defeat at the Sydney Cricket Ground. Gavaskar highlighted the batting unit’s consistent failures, particularly their inability to perform under pressure, as a key factor in the series loss.
In an interview with Star Sports, Gavaskar questioned the effectiveness of the coaching staff, specifically targeting Gambhir’s assistants—Abhishek Nayar, Ryan ten Doeschate, and MorneMorkel. He remarked, “What was your coaching staff doing in Australia?” emphasizing that there was no visible improvement in the batters’ performances. Gavaskar pointed out recurring issues, such as ViratKohli’s dismissals outside off-stump, and called for accountability from the coaching team regarding their strategies and preparations.
He concluded by suggesting that if improvements are not seen soon, it may be time to reconsider the current coaching staff ahead of upcoming tours, stressing that the players must take responsibility for their performance in domestic competitions like the Ranji Trophy.
