For Third New Zealand Test, Matthew Potts Replaces Chris Woakes As England Keep Building

England has recalled Matthew Potts for the third Test against New Zealand, replacing Chris Woakes as part of their strategy to build bowling depth after securing the series. The final Test, starting in Hamilton on Saturday, is a dead rubber following England’s dominant victories in Christchurch and Wellington, marking their first series win in New Zealand since 2008.

Potts, who has played nine Tests since his debut in 2022, is expected to take the new ball. He made a strong impression during his debut series against New Zealand, taking seven wickets, including twice dismissing Kane Williamson. Captain Ben Stokes praised Potts for his “massive engine” and versatility, stating that this match presents an opportunity to assess a fast bowler who could play a significant role in the future.

Stokes emphasized the importance of giving experience to players who may not always get opportunities, noting that none of England’s specialist bowlers have played more than 14 Tests. While Woakes has performed well with six wickets at an average just under 30 in the series, Stokes clarified that Woakes’s form was not the reason for his exclusion. Instead, the decision reflects England’s position in the series and their desire to explore their bowling options.
