Former cricketer of Sri Lanka, Muttiah Muralitharan, is critical of their World Cup 2023 campaign
The spin legend of Sri Lanka, Muttiah Muralitharan, did not hold back his words as he delivered harsh criticism on the team that took part in the 2023 ODI World Cup, which was hosted by India.In an interview, Muralitharan was quoted saying, “This World Cup has been a dismal performance by the Sri Lankan cricket team.”Sri Lanka managed to finish ninth on the league table, having picked just two wins out of the nine games in the tournament. Those two wins came against the Netherlands and England, both of which were among the weaker sides in the tournament.Muralitharan also went on to say, “We have been playing the one-day internationals since 1975, and this year has been one of their worst performances in the World Cup.”The legend believes that the players have themselves to blame and that the squad has to take responsibility for their poor performances.He also added,” At the end of the day, you can have the best of coaches and advisers, but the players are the ones that have to perform. They have to take ownership and decide how they can rectify and improve that; they have to go back and work hard and come back.”
