Shikhar Dhawan recently shared insights into the contrasting leadership styles of former captains MS Dhoni and ViratKohli, emphasizing their unique characteristics. Dhawan debuted under Dhoni’s captaincy and later played for Kohli, experiencing two distinct eras in Indian cricket.
Dhawan described Dhoni as “calm and composed,” noting his strong presence on the field. He remarked, “Dhoni is very relaxed. He doesn’t talk much, even during matches. His strength lies in his calmness; I have never seen him shout.” Dhoni’s leadership led India to significant victories, including the 2007 T20 World Cup, the 2011 ODI World Cup, and the 2013 Champions Trophy.
In contrast, Dhawan characterized Kohli as “intense” and highlighted his transformative impact on the team’s culture, particularly regarding fitness. “Virat has changed the culture of fitness a lot because he is so fit,” Dhawan noted. Under Kohli’s captaincy, India achieved remarkable success, including a 42-month reign at the top of the ICC Test rankings.
While Dhoni’s leadership was marked by strategic calmness and tactical acumen, Kohli’s passionate approach fostered a competitive spirit within the team. Both captains have left indelible marks on Indian cricket, with Dhoni celebrated for his ICC trophies and Kohli recognized for his aggressive style and consistent performance.
