The fate of the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy, scheduled to be hosted by Pakistan, remains uncertain following the postponement of the ICC Board meeting originally set for November 29. Reports suggest the meeting may reconvene on November 30 or within a few days. The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is steadfast in its demand to host the tournament entirely in Pakistan, despite the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) confirming its refusal to travel due to security concerns.
The tournament is planned from February 19 to March 9, 2025, but no definitive schedule has been announced, causing delays and raising concerns among broadcasters. The ICC aims to resolve this deadlock and ensure a successful multi-nation event. The BCCI has proposed a hybrid model, where India would play its matches in the UAE, but the PCB has rejected this option.
Recent unrest in Pakistan, including violent protests that forced Sri Lanka’s A team to cut its tour short, has intensified scrutiny over Pakistan’s ability to host international cricket. PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi is advocating for Pakistan’s position while attending meetings in Dubai, where he has emphasized that all other teams are willing to travel to Pakistan.
If an agreement cannot be reached, the ICC may consider relocating the tournament entirely, which would significantly impact Pakistan both financially and in terms of prestige. A voting process among ICC member boards could ultimately determine the tournament’s fate.
