Former Indian cricketer Ravichandran Ashwin has expressed strong support for Yashasvi Jaiswal to open the innings for India in the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy 2025. Jaiswal, who recently earned his first ODI call-up for the series against England, has been in exceptional form over the past 18 months, making a compelling case for his inclusion at the top of the order.
In a YouTube video, Ashwin highlighted that a left-right batting combination would be beneficial against opposing bowlers, particularly off-spinners. He suggested that Shubman Gill should bat at number three, with Virat Kohli moving down to number four. Ashwin emphasized the importance of utilizing Jaiswal's current form effectively, stating, "It is the team’s responsibility to use the form of a player correctly."
Despite Jaiswal's impressive statistics, including being India's top run-scorer in Tests last year, there are concerns regarding his place in the playing XI. Captain Rohit Sharma and vice-captain Gill are expected to open the batting. While Gill has struggled recently in ODIs, it remains uncertain whether India will experiment with Jaiswal at the top or stick with their established pair as they prepare for the tournament starting February 19, 2025.
