In IND vs NZ Test Manjrekar on captaincy decisions says, “Rohit must bring Dhoni’s leadership quality”

Rohit Sharma’s captaincy in the first Test against New Zealand in Bengaluru came under scrutiny after India was bowled out for 46 runs on a tricky pitch under overcast conditions. Former cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar criticized Rohit’s decision to bat first, comparing his leadership to that of MS Dhoni. Manjrekar highlighted Dhoni’s ability to anticipate and make crucial bowling changes before situations got out of control, urging Rohit to adopt similar proactive decision-making skills.

Although India managed to dismiss key New Zealand batsmen like Daryl Mitchell and Tom Blundell on Day 3, Rohit’s frustration grew when RachinRavindra and Tim Southee formed a crucial 112-run partnership for the eighth wicket. Manjrekar pointed out that Rohit needed to sharpen his ability to make timely interventions, something Dhoni excelled at during his career.

In a press conference, Rohit acknowledged his mistake, admitting he misjudged the pitch conditions, expecting it to be flatter after the first session. He expressed his disappointment in the outcome but accepted responsibility for the decision to bat first. As New Zealand built a strong lead, India was left to reflect on their strategic errors in the ongoing Test.
