In a stunning display of spending, Rishabh Pant became the costliest player in IPL history when the Lucknow Super Giants acquired him for ₹27 crore during the IPL 2025 mega auction. This record-breaking bid came just minutes after Punjab Kings secured ShreyasIyer for ₹26.75 crore, surpassing Mitchell Starc’s previous record of ₹24.75 crore from last year. Arshdeep Singh was the first player sold in the auction, going to Punjab Kings for ₹18 crore after they used their Right to Match (RTM) card against Sunrisers Hyderabad.

The auction, held in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, featured marquee players like KL Rahul, Mohammed Shami, David Miller, and YuzvendraChahal, all expected to attract significant bids. The two-day event began with 84 top players on Day 1, while Day 2 will see franchises nominate players for accelerated bidding.

Each team entered the auction with a maximum purse of ₹120 crore, with Punjab Kings leading at ₹110.5 crore due to retaining only two players. The IPL 2025 auction is critical for teams looking to rebuild their squads from a pool of 574 players, with a total of 204 slots available across ten franchises.
