On Tuesday, the tail-enders of Mumbai No. 10 and No. 11 batters, TanushKotian and Tushar Deshpande, created history of sorts when they became only the second first-class pair in history to score centuries during an inning. The record came in Mumbai’s Ranji Trophy quarter-final encounter against Baroda on Tuesday.
Starting at the overnight score of 337/9, the duo of Kotian (120) and Deshpande (123) added 232 runs together for the last wicket. Meanwhile, these were maiden FC tons for both batters.
The only other No. 10 and 11 pair to have scored a ton together in an innings was ChanduSarwate and Shute Banerjee in 1946, vs. Surrey for the Indians at the Oval. There were a few more records that were created in this inning. As per the Indian Express, Kotian-Deshpande became the third Indian pair to record a partnership of over 200 for the last wicket.
On the other hand, Deshpande is also only the third Indian to score a ton at No. 11. As far as the match between Mumbai and Baroda is concerned, their innings ended at 569, setting an impossible target of 606 for the opposition.
