In the upcoming Sri Lanka series, Shreyas Iyer pushes for India's return
The star batsman of Team India, who led the Kolkata Knight Riders to their third IPL title in 2024, could be set for a return to the Indian cricket team. Despite missing out on a BCCI central contract, the impressive IPL performance of Iyer has him in contention for selection on the upcoming tour of Sri Lanka.
The leadership of Shreyas and his batting prowess in the IPL have caught the eye of selectors. With the possibility of former batsman Gautam Gambhir taking over as India’s head coach, this tour could see Iyer reunite with his KKR mentor shortly after their IPL triumph.
The appointment of Gautam Gambhir as coach hasn’t been officially confirmed, but the Sri Lanka series could mark the beginning of his tenure.
While Shreyas Iyer might not be part of the squad for the upcoming Zimbabwe T20I series in July, as per sources, there is a high chance of him featuring in the Sri Lanka ODIs later that month.
The BCCI source highlights that players performing well in the IPL, like Abhishek Sharma and Mayank Yadav, are currently training at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) for possible selection in the Zimbabwe series.
