In worrying signs for Aussies, Sri Lanka defeat Australia in first ODI by 49 Runs

In the first ODI between Sri Lanka and Australia in Colombo, Sri Lanka emerged victorious by 49 runs. Sri Lanka now leads the two-match series 1-0.

Sri Lanka scored 214 in 46 overs, with captain Charith Asalanka leading the way with a career-best 127 off 126 balls. Dunith Wellalage was the next highest scorer with 30. Australia was then bowled out for 165 in 33.5 overs. Maheesh Theekshana took 4 wickets for 40 runs.

Sri Lanka chose to bat first after winning the toss. Australia entered the match following a 2-0 Test series win against Sri Lanka. Due to renovations ahead of the 2026 T20 World Cup, both ODIs are being played as day games. Steve Smith is captaining the Australian team in the absence of the injured Pat Cummins, while Charith Asalanka is captaining Sri Lanka.
