India’s assistant coach Morne Morkel considers Mohammed Shami’s return to cricket a significant win for the team. The 34-year-old fast bowler had been sidelined for nearly a year due to an ankle injury sustained during the 2023 ODI World Cup. Although initially expected to return in September, his comeback was delayed multiple times.
Shami finally made his return on November 13, playing his first match in almost a year. Despite not being at full fitness, he took 7 wickets and contributed 39 valuable runs, helping Bengal secure an 11-run victory over Madhya Pradesh. However, concerns about his match readiness persist.
Many were eager to see Shami in Australia for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT), but the Indian management opted for caution, avoiding the risk of further aggravating his injury. Morkel acknowledged that the team is monitoring Shami’s recovery closely, offering him the necessary support to regain his form.
“We are keeping a close eye on Shami. After being out for a year, it’s a massive win to see him playing again. We’re working to help him find his rhythm. He’s a world-class bowler,” said Morkel.
While Morkel didn’t confirm Shami’s inclusion for the remaining BGT Tests, a strong performance in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy could open the door for his return.
