RavichandranAshwin has announced his retirement from international cricket following the conclusion of the third Test in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy series against Australia in Brisbane. The 38-year-old spinner exits the game as India’s second-highest wicket-taker in Tests, with 537 wickets at an average of 24 over 106 matches, trailing only Anil Kumble, who took 619 wickets.
Ashwin’s recent performance included just one appearance in the ongoing series, where he took 1 for 53 in Adelaide. His overall Test career spanned over a decade, during which he also accumulated 3,503 runs, including six centuries and 14 fifties. This achievement places him among an elite group of all-rounders with over 3,000 runs and 300 wickets.
Despite his illustrious career, Ashwin faced challenges in recent series, particularly during India’s home defeat to New Zealand, where he managed only nine wickets at an average of 41.22. With India’s next Test series set for England and Ashwin nearing 39 years old by the next home season, his decision to retire comes as he steps away from a significant chapter in Indian cricket.
Ashwin is expected to continue his career in franchise cricket, having secured a return to Chennai Super Kings for IPL 2025 after being bought during the recent auction.
