Jio Hotstar will end free IPL streaming for the 2025 season, requiring fans to subscribe to watch matches. This change comes after the merger of JioCinema and Disney+ Hotstar under the JioStar banner.JioCinema had previously offered free IPL streaming after acquiring the rights in 2023 for $3 billion.
The new subscription model will offer limited free access, with users prompted to subscribe after a few minutes of viewing. JioHotstar aims to monetize its vast user base developed through free content.
JioHotstar offers several subscription plans:
Mobile-only: ₹149 for 3 months or ₹499 for a year. It supports one mobile device with 720p resolution and stereo sound.
Super Plan: ₹299 for 3 months or ₹899 for a year. It supports two devices, including TVs, laptops, and mobiles, with Full HD (1080p) resolution and Dolby Atmos sound.
Premium Plan: ₹499 for 3 months or ₹1499 for a year. It supports four devices with 4K (2160p) resolution, Dolby Vision, and Dolby Atmos audio (ad-free except for live sports).
This shift places JioHotstar in competition with other platforms like Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, and SonyLIV. Some experts suggest that the move to a paywall could lead to a decline in digital viewership and a shift back to television. Others say that advertisers will still have access to a more engaged audience.
