Khawaja targets keeping stellar no-dismissal record intact vs Jasprit Bumrah

Australia opener Usman Khawaja has shared his experience of facing India’s premier fast bowler, Jasprit Bumrah, ahead of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. Khawaja, who has faced 155 deliveries from Bumrah in seven Test innings without being dismissed, noted that while Bumrah’s unusual action initially poses challenges, it becomes manageable with time. Speaking to Fox Cricket, Khawaja said, “His release point is different from most bowlers, coming from further out due to his braced front leg. The ball feels like it arrives quicker than expected.” However, once batters get used to his action, they can adjust.

Despite his past success, Khawaja acknowledged that Bumrah remains a world-class bowler. “Not to say he can’t get me out first ball—he’s still a class act,” Khawaja remarked, adding that with rhythm and familiarity, facing Bumrah becomes less awkward.

Looking ahead to the five-match Test series starting November 22, Khawaja, now with new opening partner Nathan McSweeney, stressed that India’s bowling threat isn’t limited to Bumrah. He praised Mohammed Siraj for his effectiveness against both right- and left-handers, and Mohammed Shami for his consistency. Khawaja also emphasized the danger posed by India’s spinners, who complement the pace attack, creating a well-rounded bowling unit.

Khawaja’s strategic mindset focuses on being proactive, aiming to score runs off any missed deliveries while respecting quality balls.
