Kolkata Knight Riders defeated Sunrisers Hyderabad in the IPL 2024 finals
Kolkata Knight Riders completed one of the most dominant campaigns in the history of the Indian Premier League by defeating Sunrisers Hyderabad by 8 wickets in the finals of IPL season 2024 at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on May 26 to win the title of the cash-rich league for the third time in its history.
KKR, led by Shreyas Iyer, ended their 10-year title drought in a way that will be remembered among the greatest in the history of the world's richest cricket league. They had previously won the title in 2012 and 2014 under the captaincy of Gautam Gambhir.
Talking about the match, Pat Cummins, the captain of Sunrisers Hyderabad, won the toss and decided to bat first in a move that backfired as Mitchell Starc dismissed Abhishek Sharma in the first over before Vaibhav Arora got the all-important wicket of Travis Head for a golden duck.
SRH never got the chance to recover from their early loss as they were dismissed for 113 runs, which is the lowest total ever in the IPL finals.
In reply, KKR lost the early wicket of Sunil Narine as he made six runs in two balls, but that proved to be a minor hiccup in the comfortable chase for Kolkata. The solid presence of Rahmanullah Gurbaaz with a knock of 39 in 32 balls, however, Venkatesh Iyer later took the game away from Hyderabad with a quick fire half century and stayed unbeaten on the crease. He also hit the winning runs as the Kolkata Knight Riders completed the chase with 57 balls to spare.
