LA28 Olympics Cricket: India-Pakistan Clash Uncertain as ICC Mulls Qualification Criteria

Cricket will return to the Olympics after 128 years at the Los Angeles 2028 Games, featuring six-team T20 tournaments for both men and women. With the USA securing automatic qualification as hosts, only five spots remain for other nations. The qualification criteria are yet to be finalized, and ICC rankings or performances in upcoming T20 World Cups may play a role.

The inclusion of cricket poses unique challenges. England, competing as Great Britain, might include players from Scotland due to Olympic rules. Similarly, the West Indies, traditionally a single cricketing entity, will need special arrangements as Caribbean nations compete separately in the Olympics.

India, Australia, England (Great Britain), New Zealand, and South Africa currently dominate ICC T20 rankings and would likely qualify if rankings were used. Pakistan, ranked seventh, risks missing out unless their performance improves or alternate criteria favor them. An India-Pakistan match remains a significant draw for global viewership.

The ICC faces strategic decisions to ensure fair representation while maximizing global interest. Discussions on qualification are not yet prioritized but will involve all stakeholders. Cricket’s inclusion aligns with efforts to expand its reach globally, evidenced by its recent appearances in multi-sport events like the Commonwealth and Asian Games.

The LA28 event could serve as a testing ground for broader participation in future Olympics, potentially expanding the number of teams by 2032 or 2036.
