On September 28, 2024, significant changes were announced for the IPL 2025 season regarding player retention rules. Teams will have the flexibility to retain up to six players, allowing both Indian and foreign players without restrictions. This decision aims to enhance team stability and continuity, as franchises prepare for the upcoming mega auction. Additionally, the return of the Right to Match (RTM) card will enable teams to reacquire players who were not retained.
With new retention rules for the upcoming 2025 auction, allowing franchises to retain five players and utilize one Right to Match (RTM) card. The retention price cap is structured as follows:
1st Retention: ₹18 crore
2nd Retention: ₹14 crore
3rd Retention: ₹11 crore
4th Retention: ₹18 crore
5th Retention: ₹14 crore
This marks a significant increase in flexibility for teams compared to previous seasons, aiming to enhance player retention strategies and maintain competitive balance. Each team will have one RTM card available, enabling them to reacquire a player who was not retained during the auction. The overall auction purse is expected to rise to around ₹120 crore, providing franchises with more financial resources.
Franchises expressed dissatisfaction with overseas players pulling out shortly before the season starts. A proposal for a two-year ban on such withdrawals was discussed to ensure better planning and team strategy.
The mega auction is anticipated to take place in late November, likely outside India, with Saudi Arabia as a potential host.
The future of the Impact Player rule was also under review, with mixed opinions among franchises.
This decision reflects the BCCI’s commitment to evolving the league and ensuring that teams can keep their core players while still participating in a dynamic auction environment.
