Matthew Wade retires from international cricket, calling the loss to India at the T20 World Cup the “end of his career”

Matthew Wade, the 36-year-old Australian wicketkeeper, has announced his retirement from international cricket, with his last appearance set for the T20 World Cup match against India in June 2024. Wade, who has been a key figure in Australia's white-ball cricket over the years, expressed that it is the right time to step away from international cricket and focus on other ventures. He plans to continue playing domestic cricket for Tasmania and participate in the upcoming Big Bash League (BBL) season with the Hobart Hurricanes, as well as other T20 franchise tournaments.

In an interview, Wade reflected on his career and the discussions he's had with Australia's chief selector George Bailey and coach Andrew McDonald about his retirement. Wade mentioned that the decision has been in the works for several years, with ongoing conversations about his future during recent tours and World Cups.

“If we went into the last World Cup and I managed to get some runs and we won that, things would look maybe a little different, and maybe I’d keep going,” Wade said. He emphasized that the communication with the selectors and coaches had been open, leading to his decision to move on after the upcoming World Cup.
