On this day, To take 600 Test wickets, Anil Kumble becomes first Indian bowler

On January 17, 2008, Indian cricket legend Anil Kumble achieved a remarkable milestone by claiming his 600th Test wicket at the WACA Ground in Perth. This historic moment occurred during Australia’s first innings in the third Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, where Kumble dismissed allrounder Andrew Symonds, caught by Rahul Dravid at slip. Kumble became the first Indian bowler and only the third player globally, after MuttiahMuralitharan and Shane Warne, to reach this landmark.

The match was significant for India, who had lost the first two Tests and were under immense pressure. After winning the toss, India batted first and scored 330 runs, with key contributions from Rahul Dravid (93) and Sachin Tendulkar (71). Australia struggled in response, managing just 212 runs, while Kumble took two wickets.

In their second innings, India set a daunting target of 413 runs. Despite a valiant effort from Michael Clarke (81), Australia was bowled out for 340, giving India a 72-run victory. This win not only ended Australia’s streak of 16 consecutive Test victories but also marked India’s first Test win at the WACA since 1985-86. Kumble’s leadership and performance were pivotal in this historic achievement.
