Australia has decided to drop Mitchell Marsh from the playing XI for the fifth Test against India at the Sydney Cricket Ground, starting Friday. The all-rounder, who also captains the T20I team, struggled throughout the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, scoring just 73 runs across four Tests and bowling minimally. Captain Pat Cummins confirmed that Beau Webster will replace Marsh, stating, “Mitchy hasn’t quite got the runs or the wickets he’d have liked, so we thought it was time for a freshen up.”
Webster, who has not yet represented Australia at any level, has an impressive domestic record with 5,297 runs and 148 wickets in 93 first-class matches. Cummins praised Webster as a “star performer” for Tasmania, highlighting his ability to impact games significantly.
The only change to the squad is Webster’s inclusion, while Mitchell Starc will play despite a back issue. Cummins noted Starc’s determination to contribute, emphasizing the importance of this match in the context of the series and the World Test Championship. A win would secure Australia a place in this year’s final against South Africa. The decision to drop Marsh was difficult due to his popularity within the team, but both he and Cummins acknowledged the need for change given his recent performances.
