Gautam Gambhir, who is a former cricketer for Team India, is leading the race to become the next head coach of the senior men's cricket team. As the tenure of the current head coach, Rahul Dravid, is going to end after the T20 World Cup next month, the BCCI has approached a few names, including Gambhir, for the role. It was earlier reported that the BCCI had spoken to a few overseas candidates as well, including legendary Australian captain Ricky Ponting. However, the Secretary of BCCI rubbished the rumours by suggesting that the board did not approach Ponting or any other Australian.
According to a report, the BCCI has yet to send a formal proposal to Gambhir. The report added that the former India opener might not shy away from accepting the job if the board approaches him formally.
"He is that kind of character who never shies away from a challenge," the report claimed.
Currently, Gautam Gambhir is focused on his role as a mentor of the Kolkata Knight Riders, with the two-time Champions set to face Sunrisers Hyderabad in the finals of the ongoing season of the Indian Premier League on Sunday.
The report further added, "It will be decided in a private conversation between Shah Rukh Khan and Gambhir, if it comes to that.”
