Ricky Ponting hails Steve Smith as “Best player” of this generation ignored Virat Kohli

Steve Smith has made headlines by becoming the fourth Australian cricketer to reach the significant milestone of 10,000 runs in Test cricket. Achieving this feat during the first Test against Sri Lanka in Galle, Smith scored his 10,000th run with a single off the very first ball he faced, bringing his career total to 10,000 runs in just 205 innings. This places him among an elite group of players, as he is also the fifth-fastest overall to reach this landmark.

Former Australian captain Ricky Ponting praised Smith’s achievement, declaring him the best player of his generation. Interestingly, Ponting did not mention ViratKohli when discussing the “Fab Four” of modern cricket, which includes Smith, Joe Root, and Kane Williamson. He noted that while Kohli was once leading the charts among this group, Joe Root’s recent performances have elevated him significantly.

Smith’s remarkable journey has seen him score 35 Test centuries, and he joins legends like Allan Border, Steve Waugh, and Ricky Ponting in the 10,000-run club. As he continues to perform at a high level, Smith’s legacy in cricket is further solidified with this historic achievement.
