Former Australia captain Ricky Ponting has expressed concern over Virat Kohli’s recent performance, noting that his underwhelming returns are troubling. In the past four years, Kohli has managed just two Test centuries, both of which came in 2023. His form in 2024 has been particularly disappointing, averaging slightly above 15 during the recent Test series against New Zealand, where he failed to score 100 runs across three matches.
Ponting remarked on the alarming statistic that Kohli has only scored two Test hundreds in five years, emphasizing that such a record would be unacceptable for any top-order batsman in international cricket. Despite these struggles, Ponting remains optimistic about Kohli’s ability to turn his fortunes around in the upcoming Border-Gavaskar Trophy.
Kohli, who previously averaged over 50 in Tests from 2016 to 2019, has accumulated only 1,838 runs at an average of 31.68 in his last 34 Tests. Ponting acknowledged Kohli’s status as one of the greats of the game and stated that questioning his abilities is unwarranted.
