Ryan Rickelton made history by scoring his maiden ODI century during South Africa’s Group B opener against Afghanistan in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. The 28-year-old opener amassed 103 runs off 106 balls, featuring seven fours and one six, before being dismissed by Rashid Khan, who executed a brilliant run-out off his own bowling.
Rickelton’s innings was pivotal in establishing a solid foundation for the Proteas, especially after they lost an early wicket. He formed a crucial partnership with captain Temba Bavuma, who contributed 56 runs off 78 deliveries. Together, they added 129 runs for the second wicket, stabilizing South Africa’s innings after an early setback.
Mohammad Nabi provided Afghanistan with early breakthroughs, dismissing Tony de Zorzi off his first delivery and later taking Bavuma’s wicket. South Africa opted to bat first after winning the toss and showcased their batting depth with Rassie van der Dussen scoring a quickfire 52 off 46 balls.
Rickelton’s century not only marked a personal milestone but also made him the first South African wicketkeeper-batter to score a century in the Champions Trophy, further solidifying his reputation as a rising star in international cricket.
