Under-fire Gautam Gambhir has found some support from former BCCI selection committee member Sunil Joshi after India’s shocking 0-3 whitewash at the hands of New Zealand. Gambhir, who took over as India’s coach with high expectations, has faced heavy criticism after a rough start to his coaching stint. Following the team’s historic home series loss to New Zealand in Tests, something India had never experienced before, Gambhir’s coaching abilities have come under intense scrutiny. Earlier, India also suffered a rare ODI series defeat to Sri Lanka under his watch, marking their first such loss in 27 years.
Despite the poor results, Joshi urged critics to give Gambhir more time before making conclusions about his coaching credentials. He expressed confidence in Gambhir’s ability to bounce back, citing his fighting spirit as a cricketer and his commitment to the game.
Joshi said, “Gautam is a fighter, and we know his dedication to the team. No coach wants poor results, and it’s too early to judge him based on two Test series. He further stressed that Gambhir’s coaching potential should only be assessed after a reasonable period, suggesting at least two years for his strategies to show results.
“We must allow him and his staff to settle. After two years, the results will speak for themselves,” Joshi added.
