On Sunday, July 21, the captain of the Indian women's cricket team, Harmanpreet Kaur, and Richa Ghosh’s fireworks ensured that India reached the semi-finals of the Women’s Asia Cup 2024 with a thumping 78-run win over the UAE. India posted a target of 201 runs in their 20 overs on the back of half centuries from Harmanpreet and Richa as the UAE struggled with the chase and the Indian bowlers once again continued their disciplined approach. This was the first time India surpassed 200 runs in a T20 international.
Richa was also the first Indian wicketkeeper-batsman to score a fifty in the Women’s Asia Cup. Captain Harmanpreet Kaur also shone with a score of 66, finishing as the top scorer for the inning. India concluded their innings at 201 for 5 in 20 overs, surpassing their previous best T20I total of 198 for 4 against England in 2018 in Mumbai.
The UAE innings struggled to find any momentum in the early overs, as they could only get 11 runs in 4.2 overs before they lost their first wicket in the form of Theertha Satish. Samaira Dharnidharka also failed to make any impact with the bat as the onus firmly fell on skipper Oza.
Deepti Sharma was the pick of the Indian bowlers, as she picked up two wickets for just 23 runs.
