To attend IPL mega auction with SRH, Australia’s assistant coach Daniel Vettori could skip Perth Test

Australia’s assistant coach, Daniel Vettori, faces a dilemma as he may have to choose between the first Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) Test in Perth and the IPL 2025 mega auction in Jeddah. Vettori, who is also the head coach of Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), was able to balance both roles last year, but this time, the schedule clash makes it impossible. The India vs Australia 1st Test runs from November 22-26, while the IPL auction will be held on November 24-25, forcing Vettori and Cricket Australia (CA) to make a choice.

Vettori’s contract with CA requires him to be available for a certain number of days, giving him flexibility to participate in franchise leagues like the IPL and The Hundred alongside his main role as Australian assistant coach. However, this scheduling conflict has put both Vettori and CA in a difficult position.

As of November 13, CA has not confirmed whether Vettori will remain with the team or head to Saudi Arabia for the auction. The situation highlights the shifting power dynamics in modern cricket, where franchise leagues like the IPL can hold significant influence over international commitments. Many wouldn’t be surprised if Vettori ends up at SRH’s auction table, reflecting the increasing prioritization of the IPL even over key international matches like the Perth Test.
