VVS Laxman, along with his support staff at the National Cricket Academy, might take the Indian cricket team to Zimbabwe for the five-match T20 International series, which is going to start on July 6, where Gautam Gambhir is expected to start his tenure as head coach of the Indian cricket team on the Sri Lanka tour.
It is understood that the squad for the Zimbabwe series is going to be announced by the end of this week, either on June 22 or 23. Currently, the young performers of the Indian Premier League, including the BCCI-targeted list of players, are going to have a camp under the supervision of Laxman at the NCA. Currently, Gambhir is the favorite to become the head coach of the senior main team of India, piping former head coach of women cricket team WV Raman.
The announcement is only a formality and might happen in the next few days. Gambhir also gets a chance to pick his support staff, which includes a batting, bowling, and fielding coach. However, it is also understood that Gambhir might start with an assignment from team India, which is going to travel to Sri Lanka for a white-ball series consisting of 3 T20 international and 3 ODI matches.
As per the statement of a BCCI source, “there is a possibility that Laxman, along with some of the NCA coaches, will travel with the new look squad to Zimbabwe. Laxman and the NCA team have always filled up whenever Rahul Dravid and the first team coaches have been taking periodic breaks during their stint.”
