With middle-order return for India Steven Smith’s Test opening stint over

Steve Smith has decided to return to his original number four batting position for the upcoming Border-Gavaskar Trophy following Cameron Green’s injury. Australia’s chief selector, George Bailey, confirmed that Smith would not open the batting, a role he briefly assumed after David Warner’s retirement. Smith expressed a desire to move back down the order, where he has previously excelled, boasting an impressive average of 61.51 in 111 innings.

Green’s absence due to a six-month recovery from back surgery has opened up a spot in the batting lineup, prompting discussions among the coaching staff and selectors. Captain Pat Cummins and coach Andrew McDonald have been in ongoing conversations with Smith about this adjustment.

While Smith struggled as an opener, scoring only 171 runs in eight innings, his return to the middle order is seen as a strategic move to bolster Australia’s batting strength. The selectors are now tasked with finding a suitable replacement for the opening slot as they prepare for the highly anticipated series against India.
